Gas and oil heating systems are to be abolished in the future. The aim is to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and advance the energy transition.

More than half of the residential buildings completed in 2021 are fully or partially heated with renewable energy. Gas heating systems that have already been installed are not affected by this and may continue to be used from 2024. No obligation to use a heat pump as an alternative to gas heating, as was discussed at times. Instead, the German government is focusing on openness to technology.
