Assange is accused of having published around 700,000 classified documents relating to US military and diplomatic activities since 2010. If found guilty, he faces a monstrous prison sentence of up to 175 years in an American prison. If the appeal is not accepted, the possibilities for legal action in the British courts would be exhausted and only one possible option would remain at the European Court of Human Rights.
