Asylum requests at highest level since 2016 in the European Union. More than a million asylum applications were submitted in 2023.

France is the second European country to have received the most applications. Germany received 334,000 asylum requests (around 29% of the total), double those of France. Cyprus, Cyprus, followed by Austria and Greece, which recorded the highest proportion of applications in relation to their number of asylum seekers. Syrians and Afghans granted protection in 80% and 61% of requests respectively, but under different statuses.
