Better job opportunities abroad: Prospective skilled workers want to leave Germany. In 2021, just 40,000 skilled workers from non-EU countries moved to Germany. The Federal Employment Agency investigated why people with a migrant background return to their homeland. The Institute of Applied Economic Research (IAW) at the University of Tübingen surveyed 1,885 people in a non-representative study. People gave the following reasons for returning: Discrimination, Residence law, or other reasons.
