The mortality of children under 5 years old fell to a historic low in 2022, finally falling below 5 million. But this “precarious” progress is still far from being enough, according to the UN.

In total, 162 million children under the age of 5 have died since 2000, including 72 million in the first month after birth. Complications linked to birth (premature babies, asphyxia, congenital anomalies, etc.) remain one of the main causes of child mortality.
