The Berlinale film festival disinvites five politicians from the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party from the opening ceremony. The decision comes after protests in German cultural circles.

The AfD caused a stir in January after a press investigation revealed that some of its members had raised the idea of mass expulsions of foreigners during a meeting in presence of radical identity movement. In mid-January, a boycott campaign was launched by artists, including Nobel Prize winner Annie Ernaux, against German cultural institutions, accused of repressing Palestinian voices.
