Counting begins, Erdogan's candidates return to Istanbul and Ankara. The mayor of Istanbul Ekrem Imamoglu and the mayor of Ankara Mansur Yavas are ahead of the candidates supported by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The opposition is also ahead in Izmir, along the entire Aegean and Mediterranean coast, while the pro-Kurdish party dominates in the south-east. Erdogan's party maintains control over much of central Anatolia, with around 9% of the ballots counted.
