Depression is more than just being sad - which symptoms indicate mental illness. Around five to six million adult Germans aged 18 to 79 develop a unipolar disorder or persistent depressive disorder.

The number of unreported cases is probably significantly higher. More and more children and young people are being treated for mental illnesses - 15 to 24 year olds are most often treated for the most common form of depression. The German Depression Aid and Suicide Prevention Foundation has compiled a list of the main symptoms of depression in Germany.
