The EU is revising the currently valid, 3rd Driver's License Directive. The 4th Driving Licence Directive is essentially about increasing the maximum permissible mass that can be moved.

The driver's license is to become digital and a QR code instead of today's chip is also being considered to make it more forgery-proof. New drivers would have to complete a so-called refresher course after one year to help reduce the number of accidents. The driving test could be taken at least partially in simulators in the future.
