George Miller returns with a fifth installment in the "Mad Max" franchise. The film returns to the origins of Furiosa, the formidable warrior played by Charlize Theron in 2015.

The young protagonist will this time be played by Anya Taylor-Joy, until now best known for her talents as a chess champion in the Netflix series The Queen's Game. The new part will be presented out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday May 15.. The first film grossed $100 million. Its worldwide success spawned   Mad Max 2 and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. The French saw it as a kind of samurai western. In Scandinavia, he was a Viking. The character of Max, played by Tom Hardy, is now relegated to the background by the director of Fury Road, Tom Hardy. The fourth part came much later, as the director tried his hand at a wide variety of genres, including family films like Babe and Happy Feet. The fifth installment will be unveiled with great fanfare during the next Cannes Festival.
