The 20th edition of the Cannes Film Festival was held on May 19-21. The event was dedicated to the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the U.S.

It was the first time in the festival's history that it had been held on the same day as the Great Depression. It also marked the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Great Wall of China, which was destroyed in World War II. The opening ceremony was followed by a reception for the winners of the best film award.
