In 2023, 3.7 million hectares of forest will be destroyed worldwide. Deforestation in 2023 dropped dramatically in Brazil and Colombia, up to almost 40%.

The decline was offset by an increase in the destruction of trees in various other countries, led by Bolivia, Nicaragua and Laos. Fires also played a dramatic role, especially in the northern hemisphere, with a peak in Canada, where the loss is five times greater than the previous year. But the most powerful effect on climate change still lies with Amazon deforestation, the research concludes.
