Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867) was a member of the Institut de France for nearly half a century. His Self-portrait at the age of twenty-four welcomes the public in the Salle du Jeu de Paume, the main venue for temporary exhibitions at the Domaine du Chantilly.

In this painting, which seems to prefigure the legend of Dorian Gray, Ingres appears as majestic and refined as these august and elegant stones.
