In Germany the 'robots' also rest on Sunday. A chain of self-service automated stores is forced by judges to remain closed.

Sunday rest has been enshrined in the German Constitution since 1919 and was confirmed by the Constitutional Court in a 2009 verdict. The legal battle was started by the German services union known as "Verdi" after the opening of the first automated shop in Fulda four years ago. The union is fundamentally opposed to Sunday shopping, arguing that retail workers needs Sunday as a guaranteed day off to spend time with family and friends.
