Around ten activists from an association in the Canary Islands begin a hunger strike this Thursday to demand an end to communications work. “The indefinite hunger strike that begins today is a desperate cry for a better future for our islands.

The Canarian government will be responsible for the consequences of the hunger strike,” insisted the movement. A large demonstration is also due to take place on April 20 at the initiative of the Association of Friends of Nature of Tenerife to denounce the “environmental and social collapse” of the territory. The number of tourists has indeed exploded, from 11.5 million per year to around 16 million peryear over the past decade, according to local environmental organization Fundación Canarina. The collective calls in particular for the preservation of natural areas, the introduction of an ecotax, a moratorium on tourism and vacations, as well as the regulation of the purchase of housing by foreigners. ‘We are putting our health at stake, because our young people have become aware of the dark future that awaits us,’ reacted a spokesperson for the movement, to Cope radio.
