In three out of four UK companies, women remain paid less than men. The median gap, however, narrowed to 9.1% in 2023-2024, the lowest since British companies were legally required to declare their pay gaps in 2017.

The effectiveness of this legal obligation is debated in the United Kingdom, because no fine has been imposed against companies not declaring their figures. In France too, women earn 14.9% less than man for equal working hours, according to INSEE, in the private sector only.
