New study published: Too much protein is said to be harmful to the heart. Scientists at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine found that increased protein intake can lead to atherosclerosis.

This is a buildup of fats, cholesterol and other substances in and on the artery walls. A “protein intake of more than 22 percent of dietary energy requirements” can promote arteriosclerosis. However, this scientific finding is not based on human subjects, but on mice. Dr. Tobias Weigl, emergency physician, recommends increasing protein intake during physical activity.
