Newborn great white shark probably photographed for the first time. No image of an individual born just a few hours old has been made until now.

This advance could help improve the protection of this species classified as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Sharks are often collateral victims of fishing or culling campaigns to protect beaches, while attacks on humans are rare. The study was published in the specialist journal Environmental Biology of Fishes, which published the photo this Tuesday. It was taken near the Californian coast, near the city of Santa Barbara.
