Snowshoeing can be practiced from 4 to 85 years old with a minimum of physical fitness. It leads to fewer injuries than skiing due to the lower speed and the lower risk of collision with other people.

The oldest snowshoe in the world dating back to the late lateolithic has been preserved at the South Tyrol Archaeological Museum since 2023. Snowshoe running competitions are held all over the world, but the largest one, recognized as a world championship, is La Ciaspolada.
