Tenants and landlords have various options in tenancy law to protect themselves. Both parties can terminate a tenancy at the end of the month, but no later than the third working day of the following calendar month.

If there are still outstanding invoices, such as for ancillary costs, these must also be mentioned in the notice of termination. If, for example, both persons are registered in the rental agreement for a couple, both must also sign the termination letter. An extraordinary termination can be issued in such a case, according to the German Civil Code.
