Italy has avoided the hypothesis that Italy and all Member States of first entry would be paid to keep irregular migrants in their territories. Italy will not be the collection centre for immigrants on behalf of Europe.

"We were able to obtain a legal framework for possible agreements with safe third countries and we also avoided the imposition of limitations that would have excluded some countries," said Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi. "It was a busy day. This is a place of mediation and we are satisfied", he added.
