The European Parliament approved new rules on Tuesday to regulate political advertisements. Entities based outside the European Union will now be prohibited from funding political advertising within the EU in the three months preceding an election or referendum.

The legislation also requires online platforms to clearly report political advertisements so that everyone can know why they were targeted. The Commission will be responsible for setting up, two years after the entry into force of the new rules, a publicly accessible database listing all online political advertisements for a maximum period of seven years.
