Pope Francis and Emmanuel Macron have jointly accepted the resignation of the archbishop of Strasbourg, Mgr Luc Ravel. Ravel had submitted his resignation at the end of April.

He was the subject of a Vatican inspection following criticism of his governance. The Conference of Bishops of France announced the appointment of Monsignor Philippe Ballot, Archbishop-Bishop of Metz, as the new archbishop. The episcopal see is therefore vacant, pending the appointed of the next archbishop, the conference said.
