Investment fund Alpac Capital, headquartered in Portugal, acquired a majority share in Euronews in July 2022. At least a third of the funds come from sources linked to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

The Hungarian Szechenyi Fund, an organization under the supervision of a foundation chaired by Economy Minister Mihaly Varga, made a contribution of 45 million euros. The operation aimed in particular to mitigate “left-wing bias” in the media, according to a presentation obtained by the Hungarian investigative website Direkt36. The main partner in the Hungarian government's communications operations, New Land Media, has for its part granted a loan of 12.5 million euros to a Hungarian subsidiary of AlPac Capital involved in this purchase. A continuous news channel launched in 1993 by around twenty European television channels, Euronew originally broadcast from Lyon in 15 languages with an editorial staff of 400 journalists. Providing information to more than 400 million households in 160 countries, it has undergone a series of restructurings since 2020.
