The European Parliament approved a resolution calling for enshrining the right to abortion in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. The non-binding resolution, the second of its kind in less than two years, comes after France's decision to protect this right in its Constitution.

In Malta – the country of origin of the president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola – abortion remains illegal except, since last year, in the event that the mother's life is in danger. The reversal of the strict laws approved by Poland's previous government is causing a deep division in the alliance led by the current Polish prime minister, Donald Tusk. In their new resolution, MEPs also call on the Polish and Maltese authorities to repeal their laws on abortion and other measures that prohibit and restrict it. They also condemn the refusal of doctors in some Member States to perform abortions on the basis of a conscience clause, and regret that this clause is often used in situations where any delay puts endangering the life or health of the patient.
