UNESCO has included in its global program for the protection of documentary heritage, registers identifying people in slavery in several former French colonies. Decision welcomed by the Foundation for the Memory of Slavery.

These documents are "essential to honor the individual memory of the victims of French colonial slavery," says the Foundation. Documents considered as important as the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, the American Declaration of Independence or Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, says the foundation. The decision of UNESCO, taken on May 18, concerns the archives of Martinique and Guyana.
