The smell is caused by bacteria that live on the surface of our skin and break down sweat into smelly components. Sweat itself doesn't stink at all, it is the bacteria that decompose the sweat and produce, among other things, butyric acid, which in turn smells penetrating and pungent.

If you don't want to get annoying foot odor in the first place, you should first choose the right shoes. Socks made of absorbent material, such as thin cotton socks, prevent this. Shoes made of synthetics do not wick away moisture.
