For the fourth time in five months, lava fountains have emerged from the ground in the southwest of the island country. During the volcanic eruption in mid-January, three houses near Grindavik went up in flames or were covered in lava.
This natural disaster was then the most serious and threatening for more than 50 years on this island accustomed to the roars of the underground. Population and authorities hope that the dikes built in recent weeks will protect the villages. The specters of the past come back to haunt the Icelandic population.
