Gonzalo Leal, 55, died 1,500 meters from the coast of Punta Lara, Argentina. He was participating in a swimming competition in open waters.

Leal was also known in his city for having ventured into politics. He ran in the 2020 elections as a candidate for mayor of Salto, but lost to Andrés Lima, from Frente Amplio, who won re-election. "You'll see how you start that dream that had waited for you for so long," he had said.
