What caused the disappearance of Matosin and Sapinas remains a mystery – but another mystery is what is behind the sudden drop in reports of disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle. The interest in the 1.5 million square kilometres of ocean waters between Florida, Puerto Rico and Bermuda can be traced back to a 1968 article on Flight 19.

The U.S. Coast Guard has put together a document with several possible rational explanations for disappearance of vessels and planes in the area. "Most of the disappearances can be attributed to the unique environmental characteristics of the region," they wrote.
