Roman Vishniak is best known for his shtetl photographs, which documented the Jewish communities in Poland and Eastern Europe. "Vishniak" is a new documentary about his work and turbulent life.

The film will be screened this week as part of the Docaviv documentary festival in Tel Aviv. "He had a very special connection with his subjects, you see it in the way they look at him," says director Laura Bialis. "You could say that Vishniaks was the Forrest Gump of 20th-century Jewish history," says Bayliss.
