Naomi Peña Villasano, 18, sued her school district after she was banned from wearing a serape with the flags of Mexico and the United States at her graduation. The Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF) is representing the young woman.

Other students will be allowed to wear other items related to their culture or current or future service during graduation, MALDEF says. The district later said it would not comment, citing ongoing litigation, and said it had no comment on the lawsuit.
