Actress Margit Carstensen has died at the age of 83. She had not been able to take on any roles for a long time because of poor health.

For years, the heavy smoker suffered from pulmonary emphysema, which made it difficult for her to breathe. In 2019 she was honored in Berlin with the Götz George Prize for her life's work. She was one of Rainer Werner Fassbinder's great stars. She also worked with Christoph Schlingensief for many years.
