In 2022, 38 percent of employees would have worked in jobs that are highly replaceable by AI. So-called helpers and skilled workers* are still the professions with the highest potential for substitutability.

Digital transformation expert Thomas Rohrbach predicts that office jobs in medium-sized businesses in particular will be replaced by robots. In IT and scientific service professions, the substitutable potential has increased by around ten percentage points, but at the same time the demand for IT specialists who program AI, for example, is increasing. “Humans continue to decide which activities are taken over by AI,” says Katharina Grienberger, an expert at the Institute for Labor Market and Occupational Research (IAB) in Berlin. ‘There will still be bakers, simply because some people prefer to buy hand-baked bread,’ says Grienberg, who is also an expert in digital transformation. ”Digitalization can only help to a limited extent when it comes to the shortage of skilled workers,“ says the expert.
