Annalena Baerbock welcomes the EU's new asylum package. Many Greens reject the stricter laws - and voted against them in the EU Parliament.

Is the party at risk of the next dispute? The EU wants to better control the influx of refugees into Europe, but above all to limit it more strongly - the left wing of the party naturally strictly rejects this. The asylum issue poses a dilemma for the minister and her party colleague, Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck. On the one hand, they belong to a party that traditionally advocates an open immigration policy. Rapid deportations and asylum centers are a breach of taboo for large parts of the grassroots and for the Green Youth. Germany needs to work with its European partners - that's what the Greens need if they want to stay in government. The new regulations are intended to enable deportations at the border and relieve pressure on main countries such as Italy or Greece. The key aspect is the establishment of asylum centers near the external borders. The EU Parliament paved the way for a significant tightening of asylum and migration policy.
