Activists from a local action group began a hunger strike on April 11 to denounce an unjust local policy. The Spanish archipelago, located off the coast of Morocco, was one of the most visited regions of Spain in 2023.
The movement called for a broad mobilization, which began this Thursday at 5 p.m. in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Other groups are raising their voices in the archipelagos, like the Asociación Tinerfeña de Amigos de la Naturaleza, which also denounces an “environmental collapse and social’s social collapse” A large gathering is planned for April 20 on several islands: Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and La Palma. Their slogan: “The Canary Islands have a limit”, according to local media Diario de Avisos, they are demanding in particular the preservation of natural spaces, the establishment of an eco-tax, and a moratorium on tourism.
