Commission on Reproductive Self-Determination and Reproductive Medicine will publish its final report on April 15, 2024. The working group wants to recommend general impunity for abortions within the first twelve weeks.

Ten percent of aspiring gynecologists do not learn how to perform abortions during their specialist training. Medical student Fiona Franz is deputy chairwoman of ProFamilia and co-founder of Medical Students for Choice (MSFC) Hamburg. She welcomes this step, but has concerns about whether it will really change the situation. The topic of abortion is already part of the curriculum at her university. It is not a niche topic: there are around 100,000 abortions in Germany every year. There are around 11,000 ophthalmologists for every 27,000 Gynecologists in Germany. The number even increased in September 2023 to 2023. The federal government announced that abortion would become a mandatory part of medical licensing regulations from 2025 via the National Competence-Based Learning Goal Catalog for Medicine (NKLM)
