In the third attempt in less than a decade to change the 1980 constitution, the electorate in Chile backed a new force. The Republican Party, identified with the military regime, does not believe that Chile needs a new constitution.

In the elections on Sunday, May 7, 35% of voters supported candidates on the party's list, the highest support received by any Chilean party in 30 years. The big question that leaves this Sunday in Chile is whether the Republican Party will play to keep intact the guiding principles of the Pinochet Constitution.
