Gabriela Cabezón Cámara is a finalist for the Booker International Prize. She is the author of The Girls of the Naranjel, a novel based on the life of Monja Alférez, a Spanish transvestite.

The book is set in the Paraná jungle and is inspired by Catalina de Erauso, who fled from the convent where she was a novice and joined the Conquest of America, disguised as a man, under the name of Antonio. The author was encouraged to explore the jungle with photographer Emilio White.
