[HIGHLIGHTS] 1.2 trillion euros: German social spending has almost tripled

Germany spends 1,179 billion euros, around 1.2 trillion euros annually. In 1992 it was 448.3 billion euros.

The share of social benefits rose from 26.3 to 30.5 percent in the same period. The largest item is pension insurance, with a share of 29.7 percent.
