A decade of documenting more than 63,000 migrant deaths shows that fleeing is deadlier than ever. 2023 was the deadliest year for migrants in the world, although the numbers could be higher.

Almost 60% of deaths recorded by the IOM in the last decade were related to drowning. Of the victims whose nationalities were known to IOM, one in three died while fleeing countries in conflict. Thousands of drownings have also been recorded along the US-Mexico border, in the Atlantic Ocean and in the Gulf of Aden.
