The formation of the human being and the configuration of social customs are the result of an exercise of self-limitation. By remaining silent we defend public space, but we also defend ourselves against it, against the drawbacks of communicative exhibitionism.

Jon Elster stated that hypocrisy builds the civil world because it prevents us from expressing the emotions we have, not because it forces us to express emotions we do not have. A sincere person should not ignore that there are times when it is appropriate to say something and other times it is not. True sincerity must take into account the contexts; take charge of the situation in which the things said can unite or harm, favor further communications or put an abrupt end to them. There is an apotheosis of transparency on a personal and political level that upsets things. A completely transparent person would not be credible, but unbearable. Someone without secrets would be as suspicious as someone who boasts of having nothing to hide. Democracy cannot be carried out without a space of discretion and compromise to negotiate commitments.
