A man has taken at least 18 people hostage at the Rio de Janeiro bus station. The Military Police mobilized the Special Operations Battalion (BOPE) The entire station area was evacuated and cordoned off.
Kidnappings of this type, relatively frequent in Rio in the 1990s, have long ceased to be part of the daily routine of Cariocas.
