The Greek Parliament last night approved a bill allowing same-sex couples to marry in the country. The decision was greeted with cheers by spectators in the legislature and many gathered in the streets of the capital Athens.

Many in the Christian-Orthodox country oppose the move, but the gay community believes that the passed law is another significant step on the way to full equality of rights. The bill caused controversy among the legislators, and did not even receive the support of the ruling party, "New Democracy"
