European leaders are keen to show their firmness on irregular immigration, three months before the parliamentary elections where polls predict a surge in the far right. The effectiveness of these partnerships is, however, open to question. If Turkey welcomes more than 3 million Syrian refugees on its soil, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has not hesitated to put pressure on the EU.
