Of the 500 traboules identified in Lyon, the vast majority are today in the private space of building co-ownerships. The term from the Latin trans ambulare, to “ pass through”, finds its origins in the Renaissance mansions erected by Tuscan merchants and bankers in Old Lyon in the 16th century.

In these streets, the network of passageways was used by Resistance fighters to escape the Gestapo under occupation. An envelope of 200,000 euros over three years was voted during the municipal council of March 21 for this purpose.
