Two prisoners from Rio de Janeiro's Red Command escaped from a "maximum security" prison. This is the first escape recorded in one of the country's five federal prisons.

More than 300 agents are mobilized in a non-stop hunt to recapture the fugitives. Prison visits are suspended and prisoners are to remain in their cells for five days. In Brazil, according to official data, at the end of 2023 there were 832,300 people imprisoned, in a prison system that only has capacity for 600,000 detainees.
