Three men opened fire inside a house in Guayaquil, one of the cities hardest hit by crime and drug trafficking. The bodies of a man and a woman were found outside the house where, according to local media, a party was being held.

In Ecuador, the murder rate has nearly doubled from year to year, from 14 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2021 to 25 in 2022. In prisons, since February 2021, more than 420 inmates have been reported dead amid violent clashes between rival gangs.
