An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.5 occurred in the New York area near North Plainfield, New Jersey, on Friday morning. Social media users up and down the East Coast reported feeling tremors at the time.

Tremors have been reported as far south as the Philadelphia area, EMSC says. The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center reports that the earthquake occurred around 10:23 local time. The earthquake was felt in New York, Philadelphia and New Jersey. It was centered near the town of Plainfield.
