The Arlberg Tunnel in Austria will be closed for months due to extensive renovation. As of Monday, April 15th, the 14 kilometer long underpass will no longer be accessible.

The ban applies until November 22, 2024. The costs for the second phase of the tunnel renovation are estimated at 75 million euros. There are no plans to build a second tunnel tube, according to the Road Tunnel Safety Act, this would only be required for an average of 20,000 vehicles per day. Around 8,000 Vehicles are currently registered in the Arlburg Tunnel every day. The longest tunnel in Austria connects the federal states of Tyrol and Vorarlberg and was considered the longest in the world at the time of its opening, almost four and a half years after construction began. Because one motorway bridge on the Brenner Pass is permanently closed on one side, holidaymakers are threatened with traffic jams on the one side of the Plöcken Pass on weekends and public holidays.
